Using your Epsom Salt in the Shower

You love amazing scents, you love Epsom salt, AND you love a good DIY pampering recipe! While some do-it-yourself projects don’t always work out (as this Cookie Monster cupcake fail clearly shows), this shower scrub recipe is a guaranteed win. Try it out and let us know how it works for you.

Using Epsom salt for comfort and health

You might wonder what the big deal is and why table salt (sodium chloride) wouldn’t suffice.  Epsom salt, also known as magnesium sulfate, contains the mineral magnesium, which provides a number of health benefits when absorbed through the skin- like reducing inflammation in sore muscles.  In our DIY recipe, the Epsom salt serves as a gentle exfoliator that breaks up and removes dead cells left behind on skin.  As an added bonus, it reduces aches and pains while providing relaxing aromatherapy.

Soft Mint Bath SaltScent makes all the difference

Washing away a bad day (or starting a day off right) starts with choosing the right scent.  Looking for an extra bit of energy today?  Try using Heartland Fragrance Soft Mint or White Ginger Epsom salt to re-energize while tantalizing the senses.  Perhaps you’re looking to unwind and de-stress after a rough day? For that, we recommend our herbal Clary Sage– it’s earthy goodness is perfect for relieving stress and anxiety.  And for those all-important “Pamper me!” nights, we love the way Jasmine and Pomegranate pull out the stops.

Choosing your oil

Now that you’ve got your favorite Heartland Fragrance Epsom salt scent chosen, it’s time to select your other secret weapon: a carrier oil.  A good carrier oil should complement your Epsom salt by moisturizing and hydrating the skin as you exfoliate, keeping newly exposed skin hydrated and supple.  Check the kitchen- do you have any olive or coconut oil?  Both pair perfectly with our salt to create a scrub with just enough moisture to slather on nicely while providing great added skin benefits.  These reasonably-priced oils are effective, good for the skin, and can be easily found at your local grocery store.

DIY recipe for soft, lovely skin

Beautiful skin is a beautiful thing, and with just a little effort you can keep it looking healthy and supple in any season.  Each day, millions of skin cells die off and hang around at the surface of our skin, clogging pores and making it look dull.  A gentle exfoliation with Epsom salt once a week removes these dead cells, leaving you with healthier, cleaner looking skin.  To make your own scrub at home, simply mix:

  • 2 cups of your favorite Heartland Fragrance Epsom Salt (we’re currently on a relaxing Lavender Vanilla kick)
  • 1/2 cup carrier oil- we recommend Coconut or Olive oil for a sense of luxury at half the price of expensive creams.
  • Mix well and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
  • Gently massage into skin and rinse off in the shower (be careful to not to slip!)

Pro tip: For travel sized amounts, mix 1-2 teaspoons oil to 2 tablespoons Epsom Salt and store in an airtight container.

Bonus! Exfoliate before shaving: A quick shower scrub over your legs just before you shave can help reduce irritation and in-grown hairs.
